OnPage SEO Techniques

This article is designed to teach you everything you wanted to know about onpage SEO techniques and how you can get your website to the top of Google's SERPs. Remember, you will still need to work on your back-link building (or off-page SEO techniques) to get some really good rankings. But more on that will be foun in our next article.

on-page seo activities

We discussed the basics of on-page and off-page SEO in a previous article. If you are not familiar with that , I would suggest you take a quick look at it now. Take a look at the image above, which gives us a list of Onpage activities we need to do. Let's go over them one-by-one, step-by-step, so that you are able to do the same thing to your web-pages and get them to the top of Google's SERPs.

The title meta tag is one of the most important entries in the section of your webpage. Keep it no more than 60 characters long, including spaces. You can actually accomodate two keywords in the title tag if possible. But remember to start your title meta tag with your most important keyword. My favorite format for title meta-tags is as below:

Most Important Keyword. Second Keyword [Power word]
Just as it is important to start your title meta tag with your most important keyword, remember to throw in at least one power-word. Like "Revealed", "Ultimate", "Authentic", "Unbelievable" etc. Another effective way to grab your viewers attention is to use numbers. For example:

Note: Towards the end of 2017, Google apparently made changes to the lengths of the title & description meta tags-they allowed up to 70 characters in the title and upto 300 (some say 320) in the description metatag. I prefer to stick to 70 characters for the title and 300 for the description.

It is important that you keep checking for any changes from Google and update your website(s) appropriately. It could be a bit of a pain, but it will be worth it.

Make sure you research your keywords properly. You can use Google's auto-suggest, Google trends and of course, Google's keyword research tool. Once you find your keyword, do not fall prey to keywords stuffing. Your primary keyword doesn't have to appear more than 4 to 5 times in the whole of your web page. And your web-page should be at least 2000 words long. You can also add your most important keyword to the title along with a semantic keyword or LSI keyword. Remember, we discsussed how to find LSI keywords in a previous article?

Avoid Keyword Stuffing - If you thought stuffing your title metatag with keywords will get you better rankings, you are mistaken. On the contrary you could get ranked down by Google for keyword spamming! Every page on your website should have a unique title tag.

The description metatag provides a short summary of your web page. It's your 160 character opportunity to get your potential customer or visitor to click on it and visit your website. If your description is longer than 160 characters, Google will truncate it and put a ... symbol at the end.

on-page seo meta description

The description meta tag is strictly not required because in the absence of a description meta tag, Google will automatically pick up the most relevant text from your page. But that may not be exactly what you might like. Hence, it is a good practice to add the description meta tag to your web pages. Make sure that each of your webpages in your website have unique description meta tags. Also you can add at least two keywords in your description - it doesn't have to be the same ones you used in your title tag, you can even use LSI (semantic) keywords to your main keywords. Don't forget to use power-words appropriately - like "visit us" or "click here to avail fabulous discounts" etc. But remember, you only have 160 characters here and so, use this real-estate wisely. [Check the note above.]

Use the following meta-tags for web-pages along with your title and description tags. These include the bare minimum tags required for Twitter and Facebook as well as shown in the image below. Replace the texts marked xxxx with your own content. The OG meta tags are Open Graph Protocol and related to Facebook. Remember to generate your Facebook Id. Here is a small SEO browser plugin which will help you with all of these. It's called SEOQuake and you can install it from here. You get different versions for Chrome and Mozilla Firefox. Be careful with the canonical and hreflang tags. Small mistakes here can cause you big headaches later.

meta tags for web pages

HTML provides six levels of headings, from h1 the biggest to h6 the smallest. Use these headings in the correct sequence, from h1 to h6. Your h1 tag should not appear more than once and use your primary keyword in the h1 tag. For the other heading tags, you can use related or semantic keywords. Do not try to stuff your heading tags with keywords - it will be far from being productive. Add power words to your headings in a subtle manner, don't over do it.

If you have images in your web-page, make sure that they are properly formatted and load up quickly. Heavy images which delay loading up of web pages will get you marked down by Google for loading speed......[to be continued]
